Bakhiya
stitching; in chikankari, worked on the reverse so only its shadow reaches the front
The inheritor who cuts. The same heirloom the restorer would have mended, opposite ideology — Banarasi into a corset, Baluchari with a leather jacket and combat boots, a belt over the weave. The cut stays visible. This is the wearer who works from the wrong side on purpose.
What it looks like.
- structured western pattern cut from traditional cloth
- oxidised silver over gold
- boots or loafers
- raw or bound edges
- asymmetry
What it is cut from.
- recut Banarasi
- corset blouse
- cape
- dhoti pants
- heirloom offcuts
Not destroying an heirloom for content: Bakhiya keeps wearing it, which is the difference from a stunt.
